greymass/unicove-contracts

Repository: https://github.com/greymass/unicove-contracts
Activity: 41 commits to main branch, 1 PR merged

Strategic Context: New repository created in January 2025 to facilitate the token/network rebrand. The existing APIs were incapable of facilitating a new token directly through the base layer. This readonly smart contract serves as an API allowing easier access to token information (balances, staking, etc.) without hardcoding that data into apps. These contracts provide readonly API actions that replace native chain APIs, enabling more flexible and performant data access patterns for applications like Unicove.

Work Summary: January saw the creation and rapid development of this new contract repository to support the token/network rebrand requirements. The work focused on building readonly smart contract actions that serve as APIs for account data, token balances, network information, and other blockchain state. By providing a flexible API layer through smart contracts rather than requiring hardcoded token data, this infrastructure enables applications to adapt to token changes without code updates. It also reduces reliance on native APIs like get_account and enables applications to access blockchain data more efficiently through custom contract endpoints.

greymass/env-encryption-test

Repository: https://github.com/greymass/env-encryption-test
Activity: 2 commits to main branch

Strategic Context: New repository created January 2025 as a proof of concept for secure environment variable sharing in development teams.

Purpose: Proof of concept for a system that allows developers to commit .env files and other secrets to GitHub repositories, with contributors able to decrypt them using the same SSH keys they use for GitHub authentication. Uses the age encryption tool with SSH key encryption.

Work Summary: This experimental repository demonstrates a workflow where environment files can be encrypted for specific GitHub contributors (identified by their GitHub SSH keys), committed to the repository, and then decrypted by authorized contributors. This solves the challenge of sharing development secrets securely within teams without relying on external secret management systems.

Notable Technical Work

Architecture Shift: Contract-Based APIs

Context: January saw major architectural work across Unicove and the new unicove-contracts repository aimed at facilitating the token/network rebrand and reducing dependency on native blockchain APIs.

The Business Need: The token/network rebrand required a flexible way to access token information without hardcoding data into applications. The existing native APIs were incapable of facilitating a new token directly through the base layer, requiring a new approach.

The Technical Challenge: The native get_account API provides a monolithic response containing all account data. This creates performance bottlenecks, inflexible data access patterns, and tight coupling between applications and the underlying blockchain implementation. Additionally, it doesn’t provide the flexibility needed for token rebrands.

The Solution: Implement smart contract-based readonly actions that provide:

  • Granular data access (request only the data needed)
  • Composable endpoints (combine multiple data sources)
  • Future flexibility (can be updated without node software changes)
  • Better performance (reduced data transfer, targeted queries)

Work Completed:

  • Created unicove-contracts repository with readonly API actions
  • Implemented account data endpoints (voter info, delegations, REX, proposals)
  • Built token balance and supply query actions
  • Created network statistics endpoints
  • Refactored Unicove to use new contract APIs for balances, refunds, and other data
  • Restructured AccountState management to support multiple data sources
  • Added configuration system for feature flags and staged rollout

Technical Impact: This foundational work enables Unicove to operate more efficiently and sets a pattern that other wallets, block explorers, and applications can adopt. The contract-based approach provides a stable API layer that can evolve independently of the core blockchain software.

Backend Infrastructure for Web Authenticator

Context: January saw fundamental architectural changes to Web Authenticator, transitioning from a purely client-side application to a hybrid model with backend database support.

The Challenge: The original Web Authenticator architecture stored all data client-side using browser storage and WebAuthn. While this provided excellent privacy and security, it limited functionality like account recovery, cross-device access, and user account management.

The Solution: Implement a backend Express server with database support while maintaining the client-side security model:

  • Track accounts by email addresses for recovery purposes
  • Enable dashboard for user account management
  • Support flexible deployment (can run with or without database)
  • Maintain WebAuthn security model for key storage

Work Completed:

  • Built new Express-based backend application
  • Implemented database schema for account tracking
  • Created email-based account association system
  • Added dashboard interface for account management
  • Restructured application to support both client-only and client-server modes
  • Fixed all application flows (login, account creation, signing) to work with new architecture
  • Configured Cloudflare deployment to support optional database

Technical Impact: This infrastructure enables future features like account recovery, cross-device account access, and improved user onboarding analytics while preserving the security benefits of WebAuthn for key management.

For Downstream Agents

Summary Writer (agents/summary.md):

  • Focus on the architectural shifts: contract-based APIs and Web Authenticator backend
  • Emphasize the new repositories created and their purposes
  • Note the lighthouse-js migration to SvelteKit (infrastructure modernization)
  • Highlight maintenance work on Anchor mobile apps (Android bug fixes, iOS network support)
  • Note the absence of blog posts (quiet development month)
  • Highlight internationalization efforts in Unicove (Chinese translations)
  • Reference github-projects.md for display names and descriptions
  • Review prior months’ README.md for narrative continuity (November showed sentiment voting launch)

Technical Writer (agents/technical.md):

  • Deep dive into the contract-based API architecture and its benefits
  • Explain the Web Authenticator backend migration and security model preservation
  • Document the lighthouse-js SvelteKit migration and its impact on the infrastructure
  • Note the maintenance fixes in Anchor mobile apps (thread safety, UI performance)
  • Document the new repositories and their technical purposes
  • Include commit links and technical details from unicove-contracts
  • Explain the significance of reducing get_account dependency
  • Review prior months’ technical.md for project continuity

Both agents: January was primarily an infrastructure and architecture month focused on foundational improvements rather than user-facing features. The work included major migrations (lighthouse-js to SvelteKit, Web Authenticator backend), foundational API development (unicove-contracts), and maintenance of existing products (Anchor mobile apps). The work lays groundwork for future capabilities but represents a “quiet” period in terms of external visibility. Focus on WHAT was built and WHY it matters for future development.
